A Brit tricky

Majority of Brits unable to identify half the countries in Europe

According to new research by Late Rooms nearly two thirds (63%) of British adults can identify less than half of the countries in Europe!

Many British adults could not find popular European destinations on a map, including Switzerland (45%), Spain (15%), France (11%) and Italy (8%) despite the majority having visited at least one of these countries on holiday. More than half (62%) of UK adults confessed that they don't even check a map to see where in Europe they are going before travelling to their destination. The equivalent of seven million adults (16%) admitted that they can't even remember when they last looked at a map and 4% confessed that the last time that they looked at a map of Europe was in a school geography lesson.

The most shocking statistic, perhaps, is that 19% didn't realise that Britain is part of the European Union!

The hardest European destinations for people to locate were Costa Brava and Lithuania, both of which 81% of those surveyed couldn't identify on a world map.

Many respondents to the survey had not even heard of some countries – with more than one in ten (11%) believing that Iceland wasn't in Europe, 8% of whom thought it was part of North America.

Perhaps the increase in budget airline flights to an array of destinations has made travelling so easy that hopping on and off transport without actually looking on a map to see where you're going is becoming the norm. As this astonishing research shows, a lot of us clearly need to brush up on our geography!
