Travel games

Setting off on holiday is a new adventure and an exciting time for all the family, but a long car journey or a long wait in a crowded airport can mean the novelty soon wears off and the boredom sets in. Are you tired of hearing that inevitable question, “are we nearly there yet?”

We’ve put together some ideas for some simple travel games to try and keep everyone occupied and entertained, there are all sorts you can do.

Guessing games

  • I Spy; a favourite here at the Travellers Club!
  • Count the cars; each traveller picks a colour, then as a car passes in that colour you get a point, choose a time limit and the one with the one with the most points wins. It's that simple, and fun!
  • Spot the name; spot the unique ladies name on the front of every Eddie Stobart lorry.

Action games

  • Punch bug; every time you see a VW Beetle (or a make of vehicle of your choice), the winner is the first to shout out “punchbug” and punch (lightly) the shoulder next to them.

Word games

  • 20 Questions/Who am I?; first player thinks of a person/place/thing and lets the other players know their chosen category, the other players then take turns to ask up to 20 questions that can only be answered with yes or no. Whoever guesses what the ‘it’ player was thinking is up next, if no one gets it right the current player wins and can take another turn.

Holidays are always long awaited and well earned, so we want to make sure you make the most of it by being prepared in advance, so you enjoy your time together. Here are some extra tips whilst you’re on the road:

  • Bring plenty of refreshments and snacks.
  • If possible, a portable DVD player and favourite movies, if you can afford it a separate one for each child with earphones is a great idea to avoid any arguments.
  • A favourite toy.
  • Paper, crayons, colouring in books; suggest your children draw pictures related to your trip, for example if you’re going on a ski trip ask your child to draw you a picture of a mountain with snow.
  • Activity and picture books or audio books.
  • Favourite music.
  • A map so the kids can get involved and see where you’re going.
  • Encourage your children to keep a travel diary and write an entry every day.

There are also so many travel games you can buy to keep the kids entertained on the road or for when you reach your destination. You’ll be amazed at how many handy sized travel and magnetic versions are available of your favourite games. Such as Guess Who, Hungry Hippos, Connect4, Scrabble, Cluedo, Mastermind, Kerplunk, Who’s in the bag, Chess and Bingo.

We used to play 'cricket' in the car. It is all related to pub names, so a great one if your journey is off motorway. The player wins runs by 'legs' i.e. the fox and duck would earn him 6 runs (4 legs for the fox and 2 legs for the duck). This continues until you see a pub sign with Royalty, i.e the King's Head, the Queen's Arms etc and then you are out, and it is the next player's turn to 'bat'. Happy travelling!
