Divorce or a holiday

WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE

Despite the fact that India has one of the world’s lowest divorce rates with one in 100 couples breaking up, it’s apparently on the rise, so a Tour Operator based in Mumbai has launched ‘Divorce Tourism’ packages designed to get couples that have fallen out of love to put their differences aside and try again. Their Chief Executive was inspired after seeing his friend go through a divorce 18 months previous.

His idea is to try and convince the spouses to hold off from consulting their lawyers and go on holiday with a relationship counsellor in tow. He states ‘With divorce tourism, what we’re trying to do is to bring together couples who are heading towards divorce to stop them.’

But who’s going to pay? The company realise that warring couples are not likely to want to spend money on each other, so they are hoping to target family members who are desperate to save the marriage and foot the bill.

They believe if couples go away to a place they have not been before, maybe a week-long stay in hill station resorts or maybe a more expensive foreign destination, with not many people around, especially relatives, with the help of experienced marriage counsellors they can patch up their differences and make a fresh start. The costs of the counsellors are paid through deals made with the hoteliers and travel agents.

Maybe innovative travel concepts are the key to helping boost tourist numbers. What do you think, depending upon the triviality of the issues, maybe it’s worth a shot. Contact us and have your say.
