TOP 10 HOLIDAY HOTSPOTS

According to recent analysis by Cheapflights.co.uk, Tenerife topped the charts as the most popular holiday destination in 2008. In second place was Florida sun trap Orlando, with a 60 per cent increase in searches on this destination as Brits rush to spend their sterling in the US.

The price comparison website found that Euro zone favourites such as Alicante and Malaga are still performing strongly, coming in at third and fourth place.

Long haul destinations Bangkok and Dubai took fifth and sixth position, and Paphos in seventh is the only Greek resort destination to make the top ten. Dalaman in Turkey and Faro in the Algarve remain popular as people look for summer holiday value for money, with Mallorca rounding off the list in tenth place.

BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE COUNTRY

So where do us Brits most want to travel, and why? Are we swayed by the credit crunch, climate change or current events?  The results of Lonely Planet's new Travellers' Pulse Survey may have some answers;

2008’s clear winner is the US.

For the first time the US been voted as our favourite country, and perhaps considering that the country did not even feature in the top ten in 2005, it is an impressive turnaround after becoming increasingly popular due to the exchange rate of the dollar, making what was once an expensive country to travel in a lot more accessible.

We wonder how Australia reacted to the results, which had topped the category every year since 2004.In another clear indication that concerns over the credit crunch and climate change are hitting home, the UK joined the top ten of countries we are most likely to holiday in.

The UK’s entry reflects the increase in people holidaying at home during times of financial restrain, but also because people are realising how much Britain has to offer and are keen to make the most of this.
