Peru is always a popular travel destination
Almost a century after its historic finding Machu Picchu has become a place that millions long to visit at least once in their lifetime.
The citadel was discovered on July the 24th 1911 by Hiram Bingham; a US historian then employed as a lecturer at Yale University. Bingham’s original motive for travel was to locate Vilcabamba, the legendary city where descendants of Inca aristocracy had allegedly taken shelter between 1536 and 1572 to defend against the conquistadors. Whilst on this mission; a peasant named Melchor Arteaga informed Bingham of some important ruins at the foot of the mountain known as Machu Picchu and led him to it.
In July 2011 a big celebration took place to mark the centenary of its discovery. The centennial events included fairs, a film festival, conferences, the launch of a commemorative postage stamp and an international photography competition. A concert was also held with the likes of U2’s Bono and Sting.
So perhaps it's time to see what all the fuss is about and travel to Peru to learn more about the astonishing Incas that ruled a vast and wild territory with the force of their hands and the power of their minds and culture?
