Yoga holidays

Yoga holidaysYoga holiday packages are available for the more spiritual tourist. Such holidays are designed to treat the mind, body & soul to a relaxing, detoxifying break, usually in stunning locations around the world.

Both indoor & outdoor yoga classes are offered and classes are organised to cater for all levels, focusing on building strength while reconnecting body, mind and soul.

Yoga holidays provide an amazing opportunity to escape the stress of modern life while looking towards improving personal balance, by helping promote the serenity and relaxation every holiday goer needs.

Do your research in order to embark on a trip that will suit your own level, so whether you are very experienced or a true yoga beginner, you will not feel pressured or find it too physically demanding.

Common spots for yoga holidays tend to centre on an area of peaceful, natural beauty, from lakes and mountains to secluded beaches and islands. Popular destinations include Greece, Thailand, Ibiza, Turkey, Spain, Egypt and Morocco.

Retreat or holiday?

There is a slight distinction between a yoga holiday and a yoga retreat, in terms of focus and atmosphere. Generally speaking, a holiday is primarily an activity holiday, where the time devoted daily to yoga usually won't exceed four hours, in one, or possibly two daily classes, and you will have time for other activities or just to relax and chill out.

At a retreat, on the other hand, the yoga schedule is likely to be more intense, possibly including some meditation and times of silence. The main focus is to deepen your yoga practice. Retreats often offer vegetarian food, carefully thought out to fit smoothly within the daily yoga routine.

Things to consider

  • This type of holiday, unlike many others, can be enjoyed alone or with a friend/partner.
  • Just as important as the location is your teacher and the style of yoga.
  • You may wish to choose a teacher you have already studied with, or get an opinion from someone who has been before.
  • View useful information on the internet, most established teachers have websites which will give you an idea of who they are and if their style of teaching and yoga will suit you.
  • Find out if you need to take your own yoga mat, and pack appropriate clothing.
