The city's skyscrapers and other buildings have featured in numerous television shows and films. Take in the sights that you have become familiar with on the screen up close and personal. One iconic New York attraction you should be sure to visit is the majestic Statue of Liberty - you can take a tour inside the iconic building yourself, although if you simply want to see it from the outside why not hop onboard the free Staten Island ferry? Here you can capture some fantastic views of the statue, as well as the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan.
Take in a little culture with our holiday guide to New York
The city is home to a wide variety of museums, so if you're a keen culture vulture or art aficionado you are bound to find something that pleases you.
Why not visit the stretch of Fifth Avenue, Manhattan that is known as Museum Mile? As the name suggests, this particular part of road contains a variety of cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, the Goethe House German Cultural Center and the Museum of the City of New York, where - as the name suggests - you can find out more about the city's history and development over the years. The Brooklyn Art Museum contains a number of 17th century European paintings, as well as various artefacts from ancient Egypt. But if you want to see something a little more contemporary, why not visit the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd Street? The institution has pieces from the mid-19th century right through to the modern day.
If you want to see a show while in the Big Apple, the city's Broadway district is synonymous with the theatre. Here you will find a variety of plays and musicals are performed throughout the year, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood often treading the boards. Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts are just some of New York's other entertainment venues, so if you want to see a play, concert or opera, New York should prove to be of assistance.
