While you are visiting the area, you should pay a visit to Lake Thingvallavatn, which is one of the largest bodies of water in the country. It lies in the rift valley where two of the continental plates are slowly moving apart, giving you a chance to see a truly unique natural phenomenon.

If you want to get really close to the action then you may decide to take the plunge and go scuba diving in one of the two submerged rifts where this is permitted. For more information on where to go and what to do click here.
