The Northern Lights are one of nature's great spectacles and if you travel to Iceland at the right time of year then you will have the opportunity to see them in all their glory. If you want to see the Northern Lights in Iceland then the best time to visit the country is during the winter, when there are few hours of daylight. Typically, the period between September and April is considered to be the best to see the Northern Lights in Iceland.
If you are staying in the capital Reykjavik, then you will be able to book on to an excursion to watch the Northern Lights in Iceland. You can join a trip in a 4x4 vehicle that will take you to some of the best viewpoints to see the Northern Lights.
People travel to Iceland every year to view the Northern Lights and with good reason. The night sky is lit up every evening by the light show, which is usually green or white but can also cover a range of other colours. Also known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are created by electrically charged particles high in the earth's atmosphere and can only be seen in the regions around the geomagnetic poles - making Iceland a great place to go. Be sure to keep your camera with you if you want to try and capture one of those picture-perfect shots of the Northern Lights in Iceland.
