GlacierIceland is known as a country of ice and fire and to see the former, there is no better place to visit than one of the nation's glaciers. If you are visiting the country for an outdoor break then you should certainly include a hike to see one of the geological formations on your list of things to do.

There is more than one glacier in Iceland - in fact, almost 11 per cent of the land in the nation is covered by ice. You will find the largest glacier in the Vatnajokull National Park, this mass of ice, covers more than 8,000 sq km.

If you want to try hiking to see one of the glaciers but do not want a strenuous trek, then the route to Skaftafell glacier could be ideal. Following a trail from the Skaftafell visitor centre, you will reach the impressive glacier after less than two hours of walking.

Glacier IcelandAnother option when it comes to glaciers is to visit the Snaefellsjokull National Park. Here you will find many magnificent natural sights, including the Snaefellsjokull glacier that lies on the top of an active volcano and it's the center of the park. It's peal reaches 1446m and on a clear day it can be seen from Reyjavik approximately 200m away. If you make the climb to the summit, you will find the 200 m-deep crater is full of ice and around the edges you will be able to see where lava streams have run in years gone by. This national parks is one of the most visited not only for its amazing sights but because it is only a two hour drive from Reyjavik.
